Seven-Resources You Need To Stay Safe Abroad

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

Traveling abroad can be a rich and rewarding experience. To help you navigate unexpected difficulties in any city or country the following seven resources are to help you avoid serious problems during your time abroad. This is not an exhaustive list, but I’ve been traveling for the last 10-years, and I’ve learned a lot about staying safe, and it all begins right here. Reviewing them before each scheduled trip can help make the difference between a safe and fun-filled trip and one filled with issues.

  • Check your destination’s local news.

  • World Health Organization gives the latest country-specific travel notices. Some countries will have special requirements or warnings that may have changed since you last visited.

  • Register with your embassy through S.T.E.P. (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). It is designed to make a destination’s local embassy aware of your arrival and keep you frequently updated with the latest safety information.

  • The U.S. Department of State has a travel advisory page for every country in the world that lists all known difficulties and current threats to the safety of visitors.

  • You never think you need it until you do. Suppose you’re anxious about the safety of yourself and your gear while you travel. In that case, you can almost completely relax if you have the right insurance. My recommendation is Allianz Travel. They also provide cover for COVID-19!
